I find that the warnings and instructions of J.C. Ryle are just as necessary today as they were in his day. One caution, however. Though I endorse most of J.C. Ryle’s instruction, I cannot stress enough that children’s hearts are opened more easily by a gentle and humble approach than an authoritative and demanding approach. The wrath of man does not work the righteousness of God. It is the goodness of God that leads to repentance. For centuries the church has cultivated a “what looks good on the outside” mentality rather than the heart issues of life. Jesus said, “With their lips they do honor me, but their heart is far from me.” God forbid that we become so outward focused and ignore the heart of our children. It is a wise parent who does not respond to the behavior of their children initially before responding to their heart. Yes, behavior must be disciplined, but unless the heart is reached, there can be no lasting change. Age appropriateness must also be considered. A pre-schoolchild cannot be reasoned with as a ten year old. Never confuse character flaws with purposeful disobedience. Remember that God’s mercy is toward a thousand generations and His judgment is only to the third and fourth generations.The disparity between God’s mercy and judgment must always be taken into account when disciplining our children. When punishment is necessary, it is best if it be for purposeful disobedience or disrespect and then after mercy has been considered. Lastly, it is “eternal” that our children hear the beating of our hearts more than the beating of our voices.
