An immediate best seller in 1854, and now Lamplighter Publishing's signature book, The Lamplighter was second in sales only to Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Mistreated and abandoned as a child, Gerty's angry and violent disposition gradually becomes virtuous as she learns the lessons lived by the meek and gentle lamplighter. But there is much more to this story than meets the eye! As the plot thickens you will be tempted to read ahead - but don't do it! The surprise will be worth the wait.

Highly Recommended The story was excellent and inspiring. I did notice a couple of small technical errors with the printing, but not enough to detract from the story. The cover and binding of the book are beautiful-I don’t think I’ve ever held such a lovely book before. Thank you!

Highly Recommended I could not put this book down. I was so engrossed in Gertrude’s story and her growth from an angry child to a servant of the Lord. The picture painted of the lamplighter lighting more than just lamps was just beautiful.

Loved It!!! It’s obvious why they named their company after this book. Great morals. Compelling story! We had a hard time putting this one down. A definite must read. Recommended by http://www.homeschool-your-boys.com.

Five Stars and More! The Lamplighter was an outstanding book! It was a good story, and it had a GREAT message! Knowing that we are all prone to mistakes and that life isn’t always fair, but that if we turn our lives toward God, He can make good from whatever we face! Trust in Him and do good no matter what the cost!

As Good or Better than Basket of Flowers Basket of Flowers was the second book we read from the Lamplighter series. Since than we have read several good ones, but nothing to match Basket of Flowers. We were of a mind that we had read the very best and nothing would ever come close. And then we purchased “The Lamplighter”. WOW!! Now we never expect to top “The Lamplighter”. Is 6 or 7 stars possible?

Heartwarming Book! This is a dear little book! Gerty is so admirable, not because she is perfect, but because she is not and still decides to be virtuous. Gerty is one of my favorites heroines in all the Lamplighter books I’ve read. She and Marjorie (in The Lost Clue) are young women that I want to copy. The book may seem slow to some people, because it isn’t a thriller like some others, but the characters are awesome! None of them are perfect and they seem like real people. It also made me cry! To me, this book is a little jewel.

Very Good Read! The older books like these seem so well written.
None of the sex and bad language like books written in current times. I really enjoyed Lamplighter.

Highly Recommended! A beautiful story that drew me into the lives and loves of the characters. Even though my life doesn’t parallel Gerty’s life, I found myself easily relating to her and learning the value of forgiveness, trust, love, and seeking after Jesus with all my heart. This is one my children and I would have loved reading together during our homeschooling years! It is one I enjoyed reading in the quiet of my day.

Where Lamplighter Ministries got It’s Name! This was a great book! Now I understand where Lamplighter Ministries got their name. They are wanting to bring the Light of Christ into the darkness of this culture. There is a lot one can learn from the characters in this story. Patient endurance being one of them. This one held me riveted until the very end. Highly recommended!

Highly Recommended The Lamplighter was an excellent heartwarming story. It would make a great family read-aloud for ages 8 – 99.
The gospel message was accurately put forth along with great theology and doctrine.

One of My Favorite Books! I absolutely LOVED The Lamplighter! The story is beautiful, the characters are vivid, and the vocabulary is rich. I think it is one of Lamplighter’s best books (hence their company’s name). Maria S. Cummins has a lovely writing style that is straightforward, yet artistic. The biblical themes, including the sovereignty of God, perseverance through trials, and love for truth, are seamlessly incorporated into the intriguing story. Gertrude’s salvation is a beautiful picture of the transformation and new life found in the gospel. Her faith through every heartache and joy is a wonderful example of devotion to Christ, who is the only source of rest and hope in trials. The Lamplighter is one of my favorite books, some others being Titus and The Haunted Room.

Such an Exceptional Book! Wow! I would agree with another reviewer that this book is a must read! “The Lamplighter“ has made the list of my absolute favorite books to read! The suspense, mystery, intrigue, and plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat. I could barely stand to put the book away for the night, or even a short break, especially the further I got into it. I can’t say enough good things about it, and would definitely encourage others to read this book as well! I love that Lamplighter books in general bring good books to the table that are such a challenge spiritually. I can’t get enough of them!

A Work of Art The Lamplighter was a great story, although the lamplighter was not the main object of the story. From the description of the book I expected a story similar to the classical Heidi, however the mentorship of the old Lamplighter to the orphan was only a small part of the story. It was a an intriguing mysterious romance. It is a wholesome romance which encourages the choosing of godliness over beauty. the beginning was a little slow, but about halfway through it is hard to put it down. It is definitely a book that I would consider would appeal more to women than to men.

Brown Paper Packages…. First, I was delighted to step on my porch and find the sturdy box stamped with a Lamplighter. From there, I was pleased again and again! Opening the box, I found the books crisply wrapped in brown paper which I waited to remove until after showing everyone in the household. Then, I admired the lovely green cover with embossed lettering. The best for last, the sweet story within was worthy of the pains taken to present it. I am pleased to have this on my shelf and recommend it for every household. The tale of an abandoned little girl who came to belong to a lamplighter, and later, a blind woman, encompasses lessons of compassion, sacrifice, patience, faithfulness, forgiveness, generosity, contentment. All of these are woven into a story that I tried to read slowly, but found I could not put down!

Very Good! I got this book, and I really loved it! I kept myself from reading the back of the story first, and reading it from start to finish was definitely worth it! This book helped me remember to be content, and not talk to much. I was really encouraged and challenged as I read this book. Thank you for printing another wonderful God honoring book!

The Lamplighter Great book! I love the character development through difficulty and hardship. We see the consequences of wrong thinking and beliefs but also see the faithfulness of God to work all things together for good to those who love Him. That does not necessarily mean we are free from pain or hardship but in the process of all we can choose to be refined. This book demonstrates godly transformation beautifully and over time. Life change and heart change may take awhile but in the end is worth it. Loved the book.

Wow This was recommended to us when we went to drop my 18 year old off at the Lamplighter Master Guild year long program (if you don’t know what that is search the Lamplighter site!). This is one of the first books published I believe. You won’t regret purchasing it! Nor would you regret the Master or Summer Guild!

The Lamplighter is a great book…I loved the story. The beginning is very easy to read and I got through it quickly. After reading chapter 30, I was so depressed that I didn’t want to continue! But towards the end the author…………Well, I didn’t want to ruin the ending!😉 Definitely worth the purchase! I highly recommend!

    Cannot put it down!
I finished “The Lamplighter ” just a few days ago and the ending was perfect! I immediately fell in love with fiesty Gerty and ‘old true’. The story wasn’t my usual mystery but I was surprised when I couldn’t put it down! After reading chapter 30 I was so depressed that I may have put it down, except for that I couldn’t believe what I was reading! 😋
READER, BEWARE! DO NOT SKIP TO THE END! I am almost never tempted to do so, and this one had me close! The end is so beautiful….you do not want to miss this must read! I also love the lessons in self control and forgiveness. Willie’s personality jumps right off the page and captures your heart! I understood completely when Gerty said that she didn’t know he could cry!
    Wonderful! Thank you Lamplighter!
