Southworth continues the story of Ishmael Worth in Self-Raised. From the sultry heat of Cuba to the gloomy crags of Northern Scotland, Ishmael stands resolute in his commitment to those he loves. Whether he is wrestling with the icy hand of death or carefully mending broken hearts, Ishmael is ever thinking of the welfare of those around him. You can always count on Ishmael to be the rock that others need to help them through the most difficult trials. When you finally close the book, you will be disappointed that there are no more pages to read on the life of this beloved young man.

Self Raised I couldn’t wait to receive this sequel to Ishmael! I did not like it as much as Ishmael, but enjoyed reading the conclusion to an overall great story! It was a little different than Ishmael in that the story took place primarily over a period of less than one year’s time whereas Ishmael spanned a period of about 20 yrs. Some of the happenings were predictable, but I liked the ending and consider Self Raised a must read if you have read Ishmael. The story of Ishmael is now my favorite fictional story!

Self Raised Self Raised is a colorful conclusion for the characters in Ishmael. Just when your heart lifts or sinks, another twist occurs. Beautiful timings.

Great Sequel I loved this book as much as Ishmael. The characters either have their consequences or their rewards according to their choices.

Loved it! Love all of the E.D.E.N. Southworth books from Lamplighter. This is a wonderful story of self sacrifice, love and character. You must read Ishmael first as it is the sequel.

Excellent Read What a wonderful book! I could not put this book down. Although I wanted more on Ishmael Worth, this sequel was great on its own merit. Excellent writing and such deep Biblical truths.

Great Build Off Of Ishmael! I’m 15, and most of the time sequels like these leave me asking,”What if….?”, but not this book! It is definitely worth reading and continues right where the first story left off (the first one, Ishmael, is also a great read!). Although I do wish, like in the first one, Ishmael was more of a main character than a background one, it made up for that fact by focusing on Claudia Merlin’s choices, and how much they affect everyone. Self-Raised also answers all your questions with amazing results that leave you content. 5 stars from me!

A Rich and Edifying Sequel This is a rich and edifying sequel to the story of Ishmael. You need to read the story to understand the significance of the title. I read Ishmael aloud to our children who spanned ages 7-15 at that time. Then we wanted to know what happened to the boy who was born into poverty and disgrace through no fault of his own as he grew older. His strong moral character kept him from falling into several snares through his life. As we follow him into Self-Raised we see the fulfillment of his purpose. As he faithfully does the right thing (with an occasional misstep), we see that he earns the respect and admiration of all in his ever-expanding circle of influence. My only caution would be to explain the time of the writing (mid-1800’s) and the handling of the characters who are servants (perhaps slaves, but that is not addressed much). I thought these characters were handled in a charming and respectful manner, but others may be more sensitive to this issue and may wish to use these parts of the story for commentary on the difference of perspective from one point in history to another. It is an incredibly inspiring story.

Daughter Begged for This! Our daughter asked if we would get her “Self Raised” the sequel to “Ishmael” which she had just finished. Her birthday is a month away but she desperately wanted to finish the series! It did not disappoint! She read it in 5 days and loved the story. Such beautiful lessons of character to discuss with her afterwards! And she was so passionate about the lessons she learned. Thank you Lamplighter for your ministry. It is such a help to parents and a joy to our children!

Sequel to Ishmael Ishmael and Self-Raised are an excellent set. These are for teens and older. Must read both – Ishmael is only half the story and Self-Raised wouldn’t make sense without reading Ishmael first. I enjoyed both very much and they’re beautiful books, as well.

Great Conclusion If Ishmael read a little like a Jane Austen novel, Self Raised reads like a face paced spy novel. Of course the omniscient author lets you in on things ahead of time, but still manages to keep you in suspense as to the outcome. A bit of crime novel, spy thriller, love story, court room drama, and more rolled into one. And set in pre-civil war America/ England. Who would have thought. And through it all, our hero, believed to be a self-made man, certainly gives credit to a great God who in His mercy raises those who are humble.

Self Raised This review is written for the quality of the book’s binding. It is not well done. The seams are loose. The writing of the book is very good.

An Amazing Sequel to Ishmael! If you’ve read Ishmael than you have got to read Self Raised, the sequel! It really just picks up as if Ishmael and Self Raised are just one big book. It wraps up the dramatic story and has it own great underlying messages! If you’ve read Ishmael this is a must read, but if you haven’t read Ishmael yet don’t read it, you should have the other book’s background.

Excellent. Intriguing. This was an excellent read! It had the adventure, intrigue, nefarious characters, and just enough romance to make a great story. It’s not so much about Ishmael as it is more focused on the people who are important to him. It ended the way I’d hoped it would. If the ending had been different, I would have been terribly disappointed. EDEN Southworth does a great job weaving Scripture and a love for Christ through her stories. I definitely recommend this book. But you gotta read Ishmael first in order for this one to make sense.
