Though written in the 1880s, you’ll think you’re reading a story that is being lived out in the changing times of the twenty-first century! There are mobs of socialists in England, assassinations in Russia, economic unrest, protests, and violence. Taverns are filled, where strong drink binds the will, clouds the mind, and enslaves its victims. A mob mentality spreads swiftly throughout England. Meaning and fulfillment are beyond the grasp of the people. Women are disenchanted with their husbands as men long for equal rights, equal privileges, and equal pay without the sacrifice and labor required to earn those rewards. An honest day’s work from an honest man is difficult to find as crowds of humanity swell with the discontented feelings of entitlement.

But Levi Paul brings strength, confidence, and hope. He visits where men can be found; he listens and waits. They seek his advice; some heed, some fear, and some cower at the truth that he brings. Levi Paul believes it is his duty to do good to all men, even the undeserving. And there is one who is more underserving than the rest—the socialist radical who loves his daughter.

Minnie is caught in a most perplexing battle. She’s willing to submit to her father’s will and knows he’s right, but can’t she be the one to turn this young man toward her Savior? She has faith, and though wavering at times, believes “faith never rides alone but carries hope with it.” It is with that hope that she lays her desires at the cross and patiently waits. Is faith and hope enough though? Not just for Minnie, but for each of the characters in this story, it is the unexpected kindness and mercy that drives this story forward, making it so relatable to all ages.

Throughout this powerful story of redemption, one cannot help but be influenced by Levi Paul’s wisdom, grace, mercy, and lovingkindness. I was riveted by the power of an attractive Christian life and longed to become more like Levi Paul as I pondered the many truths that were woven throughout this story. Through his influence I am learning that “prayer is the bolt to shut in the night, and the key to open the day.”

If there was a book needed for our present time, this gem will bring a clear understanding of how the Christian life is to be lived in the midst of civil unrest.
