Wide, Wide World, The

(17 customer reviews)

Through endless trials, Ellen realizes that suffering has strengthened her faith, bringing her closer to God and making her better able to cope with life’s problems. The contrast in her life, especially with the people who surround her each day, creates an inner conflict, which drives Ellen to wrestle with herself, with others, and with God. This classic novel clearly depicts the Victorian era in the United States and was considered to be as popular as Uncle Tom’s Cabin and The Lamplighter.

Beautiful Book I am so glad that Lamplighter has finally presented this wonderful story in a beautiful, newly bound book!! The title does not sound so intriguing, but trust me, it is definitely a story you won’t want to miss!! If you enjoyed “House of Love,” you will certainly be pleased with this book…I happen to like it even better because the story goes into more detail of the characters. The first few chapters go a bit slow, but after a little while, you’ll appreciate the length because you really become endeared to all the precious characters. Ellen’s story encouraged me to seek Christ amidst the hardships and difficulties in life, and I came to love Ellen, the Humphreys, Mr. Van Brunt, and it was even interesting to meet the Leslies.
My sister read it with me as well, and she really enjoyed it too. We both agree it is our favorite Lamplighter, along with “Titus” and “Stephen.” I hope many other readers will enjoy it too!!!

Excellent Book!!!! I love all the books published by Lamplighter, but this has been my favorite. I love how the plot plays out to keep the readers interested and has christian character to encourage young people. Reading how Ellen’s strong relationship with the Lord sustained her in the sad times really inspires me to go further in my walk with the Lord. Great Book!! Must Read!!

Wide, Wide World My 13 yr old daughter loves Wide, Wide World. It has kept her entertained much longer (that is a good thing she says) than other books, mainly because it has many more pages. She reads so much, she often has nothing left to read. She says it has a nice interesting story too. My 16 yr old son wants to read it next. He loves anything Lamplighter.

Favorite Book! “The Wide, Wide, World” has been influential in my life for over 6 years. This is a charming story that lends insight into all areas of life, with the focus rightfully being primarily on our relationship with God, and then relationships with those around us.

A blessing just waiting to be read again and again…

A Blessing! This is a wonderful story! I cannot adequately describe it. It has been a blessing to me, encouraging me to lean wholly on our Lord. I highly recommend this story! Not only are the words inspiring, it is beautifully bound! Thank you, Lamplighter!

A Pleasant Venture This was a very pleasant read. Susan Warner writes beautifully. This is not a high drama story. It is very much like the diary of one’s life, although it does have a touching storyline. So far, this is the lamplighter book with the most scriptural references I have read and one in which I learn many lessons myself of how I would react if I were in Ellen’s position.

Excellent Choice!! Because of a busy schedul it’s taking me longer that normal to read this one, but I have been thoroughly enjoying it!! Ellen endeared herself to me from the start and the other characters are very real and believable as well. Hours of pleasure already, and looking forward to hours more!

Excellent Read I have anticipated reading this book since it came into my possession. I waited until the Summer Reading Challenge, not on purpose, but it’s how it has worked out. I’m loving it! The author does a wonderful job endearing her characters to your heart. I love how Ellen, like myself, has to learn that it is the challenges and hardships that draw us closer to Christ. And the references to Scripture and characteristics of Christ-like character make it wholly satisfying. I can’t wait for my 13-year-old daughter to read it. She will love it, I’m sure! She reads through books so fast sometimes… She has a voracious appetite for reading. I’m so thankful that I can put these great books in her hands knowing she will be learning valuable lessons and character traits I want to instill in her, and in such a fun, engaging way. Thank you for these treasures, Lamplighter. They are truly a blessing. I know it will be a sad, yet satisfying day, when I have read the final chapter of this book. Very highly recommended.

Highly Recommended Reading The Wide, Wide World was really life-changing for me. Not only did it give me a fresh view of the Bible and Heaven, but also I felt challenged by the high moral standard that John and Alice Humphreys lived and taught to Ellen. Of all the Lamplighter books I have read, I think this one may have inspired me the most. I encourage everyone to read it! Do not be intimidated by its length! I definitely believe it was worth the time I spent reading it! Love this book!❤️

Wide, Wide World I’m reading this now and love it!
So refreshing to read a book with my Lord involved!
The other books are Christmas Gifts so can’t review, but I will be reading Tested, I think as I want to keep that for myself.
    Thank you!
    God Bless to all!

A Beautiful, Slow Story This book has been on my reading list since the very first time I read Little Women and strong Jo March was reading it and it evoked so much emotion from her. And, to be honest, I didn’t see why as I read through the first part of this story. I kept on reading it only because it was mentioned in one of my favourite books, and I had been wanting to read it so long . . . and then I ended part one and started part two, and went and dug out a box of tissues.
I enjoyed watching how this passionate young girl grew into a self-controlled woman, and being able to see the journey she took will forever encourage me to mourn my sin more than I do, and to ever strive for excellency in the Christian walk.

True Favorite This book means so much to me for various reasons – one being that my mom read it to me before she passed away when I was young, but it is probably my favorite childhood memory. So many hard lessons learned, incredible vocab aid for kids, and really just a beautiful story! Would want everyone I know to read this!!
