Raiders of Lost Abundance

A Lamplighter Moment from Mark Hamby

Did you know that the type of judgment God uses in our lives is often parallel to our sin? In Judges 6 we see this demonstrated with Israel’s sin of idolatry. Israel worships the false gods of fertility and abundance, hoping for an increase in their crops. Surprisingly, in spite of their sin, their produce increases-but not for long.

Isn’t that the way it is with our sin? At first it seems as if there’s no loss or consequence. So we go a little further each time. Then suddenly, without warning, we’re attacked by the Midianites! The Midianites?

Yes, God uses the Midianites to exact judgment because they were nomadic hit-and-run raiders. Through their vast numbers they could ransack an entire country in very little time. Israel’s sinful desire for abundance is now judged by the abundance of thieves and their loss of plenty. Sadly, this scenario is repeated for seven years until they understand that abundance never satisfies apart from their single devotion to the LORD.
