Everyone tried to play matchmaker with Mark. He was a handsome bachelor about
to turn thirty. But Mark was determined to serve God and leave the prospect of
marriage in God’s hands.
That’s an unusual approach to marriage today in light of the many on-line dating
services. In fact, just one Christian dating service serves over 7 million young
adults! I’m sure this strategy has many success stories and an equal number of
horror stories, but the question is whether or not online dating is a good and godly
What might be the reasons for trying an on-line dating service? Loneliness would be
among the top factors, along with the thrill of meeting new people that you might
not otherwise meet. It might be a more comfortable way of controlling your options
due to past rejection and hurt. Or perhaps you’re just tired of waiting on God to
bring the soul mate of your dreams.
Hopefully the rest of Mark’s story will inspire you to trust the Lord for your future
spouse. At age thirty-two Mark returned to South America, high in the mountains,
where meeting his future spouse seemed nearly impossible. But later that year
Mark was summoned by his missions agency to attend a required class. As he took
his seat, he turned to look at the person sitting next to him; she simultaneously
turned to look at him. At that moment, both Mark and Diane knew that God had
providentially brought them together to become soul mates.
God is sovereign and we can trust Him. In Matthew 19:6, Jesus says, “What God has
joined together let no man separate.” Note that it is God who does the joining. Can
He use an online service? Of course, but before you try an online dating service, you
may want to give God a little more time while you wait patiently for Him to surprise
