In Faithfulness You Have Afflicted Me (Little Miracles)

A Lamplighter Moment from Mark Hamby

Dan and Dale Goorhouse prayed for a miracle. But God had a better answer for them.

The best of friends, these identical twins had roomed together in college, and as they started their own families, they lived only two blocks apart. The brothers expected they would grow old together.

That is, until Dale Goorhouse contracted lung cancer.

Neither brother was very religious, but this crisis led them to seek answers from God. “In foxholes even atheists believe in God,” Dan recalls. “I guess cancer was that foxhole for Dale and me. Both of us began to pray for a miracle.”

After aggressive chemotherapy, X-ray scans revealed no evidence of the disease. But two years later, doctors found cancer again–in Dale’s other lung. Within two months he passed away.

Although Dan didn’t get the miracle he was praying for, he values the ultimate result. “I know that my family and I will never be the same because of what happened. It gave us time to deal with Dale’s departure…and our faith is so much stronger now.”

God’s ways may be past finding out, but one thing is certain: He acts within the boundaries of His boundless love for us even in the death of a loved one. As King David of old once said in Psalm 119:75, “I know, O LORD, that your rules are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.”
