A Selfish Heart pt. 1

A Lamplighter Moment from Mark Hamby

Did you know that a selfish heart distorts our view of God and others?

In the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15, the elder brother refuses to accept the invitation of his father to join him in a welcome home celebration.

His anger reveals more of the true nature of his own heart. He says to his father, “You never gave this to me, Dad.” And the father’s response is, “Son, all that is mine is yours.”

You see, a selfish heart blinds us to the riches that God has given us. A selfish heart refuses to listen. When invited to the celebration, the selfish son stubbornly refuses. A prideful heart steals the opportunity to enjoy blessings from God.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the heart of this selfish son and see what else we can find.

Remember, words are a reflection of the heart. This son says to his father, “Look, all these many years I have served you and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a goat that I might celebrate with my friends and make merry.” Notice that the son has even kept record!

Service based on a heart of love is never burdensome, but a selfish heart serves others only in order to get something in the end.

So ask yourself, are you enjoying God’s blessings, or is life burdensome? In Proverbs 10:22, Solomon writes: “The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.” Let’s seek that blessing today.

Making ready a people prepared for the Lord,
